I've done it both ways, drilling and tapping in the old days, and more recently, with triplizer rings.

Drilling and tapping is more bitchin' to my eye, but so much more work, and with some risk that it won't come out right. Triplizer is functionally just as good, as far as I can tell, so I probably won't drill anymore.

I forget who all makes 144 triplizers but I'm pretty sure TA and Willow versions exist.
