I have an early SR headset (upper half) sold to me by a fellow CR member. He is certain that it was OE on a 1978 bike, if I understand him correctly. It has a nice, pearly (crankset-like) finish, the flats on the upper race seem to be a touch taller than normal and the locknut has a different shape. Most SR nuts are hexagonal right down to the bottom, with the flats slightly camfered. This nut has a round section maybe 1mm tall, right at the bottom, just like on an NR headset. The spacer is nicely-finished alloy, maybe 1.5 mm thick. Looks like NR, but alloy. Sounds like the spacer might be OE? I have an other SR headest that also differs slightly from the normal shape. The locknut has a taller conical section at the top, and again the adj. race flats are taller. It is very satiny. The groove on the adj. race (where the lettering is) is shallow, giving it a more rounded look, in profile. These I remember seeing in the early 80's on "older" SR bikes. I suspect the first headset is the oldest, since it is most NR-like. The second is a more common, old version. Later they seemed to change to the more familliar shape, and at the end they got really shiny and C-record like, apparently with a thinner anodizing. Finishes seem to be generally variable, but perhaps with descernable trends. Tom Dalton Bethlehem, PA Richard M Sachs <richardsachs@juno.com> wrote: no e-RICHIE still in chester...
