Didn't Shimano introduce 130mm spacing with the first Dura Ace 8- speed? I recall their first 8-speed hubs had conical locknuts to assist in snappping them into 126mm spaced frames.

According to Sheldon Brown's web site, Shimano introduced 8- speeds in 1989.
