When was 130mm spacing intoduced? Were the very last generation of

classic NR (ok, Record or whatever) hubs offered in 130mm spacing or was

it first available with the Triomphe/Victory/C-Record era hubs?<<<

My '89 Merckx Grand Prix was built with 130 spacing. I believe that was right around the time the transition started. Also believe that Campy's short-lived 7sp cassette was 130, which would seem to correspond. I know we're pushing the boundaries of the mid-80s time frame, but still think some of this stuff is relevant, particularly with regard to the "end" of the freewheel/friction era as "normal" bike fare. >>

Wayne and List Readers,

I concur with your time frame assessment........

.......as I have an '89 Davidson spaced 126mm. I also pulled out an early '87 Performance catalog and all the frames (Merckx; DeRosa; Pinarello; Vitus) they were offering were also spaced 126mm. There were MTB hubsets (XT cassette NEW!!!!) listed as 130mm OLD; and Suntour XC-9000 which offered a choice of 126mm or 130mm!!

Shimano was also offering Dura Ace (cassette - also NEW!!!) hubs with 126mm OLD and claiming either 6 or 7 speed usage.

All other hub sets (Campagnolo, Mavic, Suntour, Shimano) were for either 5 or 6 speed freewheels.

Finally, on the Campagnolo brake topic: SR brake sets were available in either "short" or "normal" reach. "Normal" reach was available with hex nut attachment oly, while the "short" reach was available with recessed allen nut.........
