I strongly suspect that the "A" and "D" on the Stronglight 49A and 49D have exactly the same significance as on the Lyotard 45A and 45D pedals. The Lyotard 45A has a steel cage - "Acier" is French for "Steel". The 45D has a dural (alloy) cage - "Dural" is French for "Dural". I have several allloy Mod 49 cranks, but no steel ones. However, if you have a 49A crank, I suspect a magnet will stick to it rather well.
