in the day, witcomb cycles and others like them made the frames to whatever specs and geometry the client wanted. of course, if the client deferred, the maker designed the frame to fit and work well. at the same time, there were other shops that simply made frames that were pre-determined designs and those designs were tweaked to accomodate various fit issues that clients may have. the first type noted resembles a more 'custom-made' approach, allowing the client to be part of the design process. often, if there was a flaw, it became the maker's fault rather than the client's. how surprising is that?! the second is more akin to made-to-measure. that is, the maker knows best about 'what goes where' and is selling his experience and design skills rather than a 'this year's fit formula'. to answer your question, when i popped out of the witcomb womb i didn't have any criteria to apply. that came three years later. e-RICHIE chester, ct
