Subject: [CR]Yet another Campy BB question.

Hello again folks,

Here is another Campy BB question following on from an E-mail discussion I had with Tom Dalton earlier today. He was incredibly helpful and got me thinking again about compatibility issues. I want to make sure I am doing things right before I potentially screw things up.

I have an NR 168-SS-120 but the SR(?) crankset that I picked up appears to be later in date - STRADA 11 within a box. In response to my question about whether an NR BB was compatible with an SR crankset Tom noted:

"NR BB is ideal with SR cranks assuming that you don't intermix pre- and post-CPSC cranks and BBs. The 68SS spindle works with post-CPSC arms. The 68-SS-120 works with the pre-CPSC arms. It is unlikely that your arms are pre CPSC since the change was in 1977. if you are not sure, there are ways to figure it out based on the markings on the arms. Not absolutely certain of the specifics at the moment. "

I notice that the crank on the drivetrain side sits right up close to the top of the taper before even tightening. The bike had a Shimano 68-116 before with a DA crankset - the spindle is a wee bit longer. Should I have a different spindle? The cups and everything as expected fit fine. Could I use the Shimano spindle in a pinch? If not does anyone have a 68SS spindle? Or would be willing to trade a 68-SS-120 for a 68 SS?

Please help, getting frustrated!
