Let me toss in my 2 cents and say that covering the wrench jaws with electrical tape helps prevent marking up the headset parts. How's about them knurled upper races? What's good to use on them?

You may not like this answer, but it leads to a possibility for you. Somehow I acquired, long ago, a humongous pair of pliers marked "Germany." the black paint is almost gone*. What is near is that the jaws are designed just for this. Curved, with hard rubber insets. If I didn't have this, I'd buy a cheap set of imitation vise-grips with curved jaws, grind off the teeth, and line with rubber from inner tube or tire sidewall.
