Normally the races are case hardened. This means that the hardness is near the surface. If too much is ground away the bearing surface will not be hard enough. If you just want to make something to look at it should not make too much difference. I have done this regrinding, I used a tool post grinder with a small mounted stone. The wheel needs to be dressed to the proper radius, this is the problem. The hub needs to be mounted on the lathe very accurately also. If you are going to re-chrome the center tube the chrome shop will need to mask the bearing race areas off. Most likely the surface that the flanges go onto also. Good luck.

As someone needing to get some 3-piece hub barrels reconditioned, I was wondering if they have much life after regrinding or will the hardened surface be ground away? When hub barrels are rechromed, do the bearing surfaces get chromed too? I keep trying to find someone who has had this reconditioning done successfully so that I can get the names of competent restorers -- I would hate to send the work out and get a load of scrap back. Anyone know anyone suitable in the UK?
