Before I moved I had a Shogun 600 touring bike. It had a nice road feel, not slow in turns. It was Deore equipped. Not that I needed a touring bike for the casual riding I was doing. They just seemed more romantic.At the time I was under the gross misimpression that all racing bikes were uncomfortable and too twitchy.

That Deore derailler systen was pretty reliable. Maybe it was less noisy than the Suntour ARX I once had (the chain noise when it engaged a cog).

I was rather surprised at how many on the list held Suntour in such high esteem.Not that I can claim any real opinion based on one sample. But review magazines described their deraillers derisively "kerplunk"- a positive reliable feel, but not smooth. I did like the Suntour ratchet levers though.

Hello Bob and CR members;

I think that the first Deore group appeared late 1980. Preliminary announcement Information before sale has appeared in the Japanese bicycle magazine "New Cycling" April 1980 issue. The first advertisement has probably appeared "New Cycling" magazine October or November 1980 issue (sorry I lost October 1980 issue).

November 1980 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_nov80.jpg

December 1980 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_dec80.jpg

January 1981 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_jan81.jpg

February 1981 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_feb81.jpg

The first Deore is the group for touring bicycle. I think that since most of Japanese touring bicycle of those days was a French style (wide-ratio gears, carrier for handlebar bag and duralmin madguards etc), Shimano developed it for the French style touring bicycle (randonneur). You will find the French style touring bicycle at advertisement of the Deore group.
