The bird is part of the F.B, (Fratelli Brivio - Italy) logo. The bolts that apply friction to the nut on the opposite end from the QR lever are usually referred to as Frankenstein (Fraankensteen? as in Young Frankenstein) bolts. These were replaced around 1949 by the "D" ring that pushes the brass bushes against the QR rod, serving the same purpose as the Frankenstein bolts but a much more elegant design solution.

Still in use over 50 years later! Brilliant! Bravo Tullio!
