Subject: [CR]matching chains to chainwheels et. al,

I have a question about matching chain to a chainwheel. I am attempting to set up a flip-flop hub--right now the fixed gear side of it--with a cottered crank from the fifties. I cannot get any chain that I have to work on the chainwheel; the chain rides over the top of it; the tension seems correct. From looking at it, the chains I have attempted to use do not fit correctly between the chainwheel teeth. What do I measure on the chainwheel and chain (is that called pitch on chainwheel?) to determine the proper match between the two? And should I find such a match, will that then cause problems with the track cog in the back?

Trying to get my school commute 50's Viking path racer ready before school starts.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers.

Tom
