Yeah, I've seen enough of those on Paramounts (and none anywhere else) that I assumed they were a Schwinn deal. And I saw so many with the large holes painted yellow on their inner surfaces, that I believe the yellow painting was factory too - anyone else remember this or have any like that? I suppose it could have been something that got popular for owners or mechanics to do, and that's why I've seen a few that way.

If the yellow paint in the large holes is from the factory, that would pretty much blow the tandem spoke theory. Anyway aren't the big holes more like motorcycle spoke size?

IIRC, newer (CPSC) curved skewers are stamped with the words "Open" and "Closed", and the bumpy section is smaller, to make the smooth section large enough for the "Open" and "Closed". Isn't the lack of those words enough to show it is the old, pre-CPSC style?
