This is definitely a concern, and I think everyone has a slightly different threshold as to what's tolerable. I've been using some low-end Shimano road shoes, with small velcro straps in front. Hasn't been a problem for me, and I use some slightly mod'ed cheap Shimano Look cleats and put some real slots in them.

If you don't actually require slotted cleats, the Diadora Voyagers are good, and allow you to walk around (these are SPD shoes, with shallow slots in the grippy rubber sole). The Carnac Carlits are very traditional lace- up shoes, and rather affordable. Available in the UK at Deeside Cycles ( http://www.deesidecycles.com ?) Too bad the leather uppers don't have nice big holes in them.

If you are lucky, you can find a pair of Dettos on ebay that'll fit you.

Haven't heard of these before. Are they still available?

MKS makes some pedals that look *very* much like the Campy pedals. For my everday bikes, I've been fond of the Sun Tour Superbe pedals (venturing to the edge of the classic period), especially the later Grease Guard versions.
