This is an area where folks can and will differ. I don't think that Richard (no relaition) Sachs rides his matched pair of Masis, for example.

Beloved Spouse and I have a fair amount of rather old American furniture, carefully selected for its workmanship and value. When we started, we agreed that we didn't want anything in the house that was so rare, well documented, and/or valuable that we would not risk using it. So, I got angry when a hyper dog decided that the veneer glue on my dresser tasted good, but it wasn't a catastrophe.

I have the same attitude toward my bikes. If I'm not willing to ride them, I'd rather let others store them. sure, I don't ride the 61 Paramount on wet roads (when I can help it), but I keep it because I love it, have owned it for over 25 years, still know the prior owner, and it is a joy to ride (and show, with cinelli bivalent hubs). I'm conflicted on another bike, which is a genuine tourer, with fenders, but too pretty to get wet, so I ride it in the dry, too. But, it won't be part of my household if I can't ride it becuase it is too rare or too valuable.

just my opinion, of course.
