Not to be a smartass - but did you see the photo where the crack is indicated with a line drawn on the photo, and, did you click the link to "supersize" it? I thought the crack was pretty easy to see. It's on the inner pulley cage plate, at the upper pulley bolt hole. Not sure why it cracked, but I bet it'll work fine and could well last forever - that crack has nowhere to go. If a list member wins the auction, doesn't want to ride the cracked one, and doesn't have a spare, I might be convinced to free up one of my used extras.

I'm pretty sure the casting is AL alloy, not steel, but yes that's where they broke (the few broken ones I saw). That piece has an unusual finish on it that does look a lot like steel - ball-burnished or shot-peened before anodizing maybe? They are non-magnetic, and when you see 'em broken it's obviously Al (unless there's some other metal that looks like that - not steel though!)
