Because of aircraft production involvement in 1935, 531became about unintentionally. It was C.M.I. metallurgist Max Bigford who spotted an aircraft tubing which he thought would be suit able for cycle tube-sets. He re-worked the specification with director Austyn Reynolds.This was such an important devolpnment, that the C.T.C.awarded a plaque for meritous achievement for their contribution to the sport of cycling.
