CR FOLK: OOPS, WRONG RIDE In attempting to attend Dave Martinez's classic ride _today_ (instead of yesterday when it actually occured) I stumbled onto the so-called "Old Fart's Ride" of 60's/70's era Bay area racers.

FAMILIAR BUT NOT SO FAMILIAR Jan and Peter Johnson were there, and there were lotsa old Cinelli/Bianchi/Rickert bikes, so it seemed like the usual ride -- but something was up: lots more riders, and lots more speeding.

"WHAT I DID LAST SUMMER" For a 'racer-wanna-be' like me it was a little like one of those fantasy camps the sports buffs pay big bucks to go to. You know, riding in the peloton with former greats. That "you are there" feeling watching these people corner and surge from close range and yet I could almost keep up -- until they started getting playful. On Alpine road, Jan Johnson came rocketing by on her Cinelli (with bivalents) to close the gap on some antsy tandem riders. Peter was sporting his Pedali Alpini jersey -- just like in that "Hearts of Lions" book. There were Velo-Sport and Wheelsmith jerseys as well. As host, Steve Lubin (reported to still have his twin 60's Cinelli roadbikes and a matching track bike) would hang back to indicate the twists and turns of the course to stragglers, and then continually motor effortlessly back to the front on his red Richard Sachs.

I wish I knew more of the names and faces. This was fun. Classic hardware AND classic riders. I'm gonna be sore tomorrow.
