Hello,

Three-cross lacing is the best way to go for people over 200 lbs. (including me). It distributes the weigh more efficiently among the spoke tensions.

However, some people consider three-cross a trade-off. By using a three-cross pattern, a longer spoke must be used which results in a heavier wheel and one that tends to flex more. Low-flange hubs allow more flex with longer spokes than high-flange hubs with shorter spokes. This is great for long-distance rides which may allow a more comfortable ride, but the track riders are generally looking for a high flange 28H two-cross pattern wheel with high-tension spokes to allow maximum power transmission for a quick start.

Prehaps this is why track wheels don't seem to last as long as road wheels. They are optomized and stressed for maximum power transmission.

For spokes, it depends on how "period correct" you want to be with your completed bicycle. I have found little differences between vintage and modern spokes. Vintage wheels sometimes "freeze up" when you try to true the wheel. Alloy spokes mixed with steel nipples (or vice-versa) cause a metal chemical reaction over time that bonds them together and won't allow you to turn the nipple or true the wheel. Vintage spokes can often be found on ebay as long as you know the exact length you are seeking. If the size you need is unavailable, I always use Wheelsmith 15/14 double-butted spokes, they work great!

The bottom line is that the style lacing for wheel and spokes used depends on what type of riding you are seeking to do. I hope thyis Email helps...
