wanted to pass this one to list memebers. its always a good time. and often a challenging ride

2002 Douglas County Gravel Road Century. Sunday, 13 October. Lawrence. FOURTH ANNUAL GRAVEL ROAD CENTURY 8:00 AM, Sunday, October 13, 2002 Start is at South Park Gazebo in Lawrence, Kansas. Same concept as the first three versions, but another new route. This one is hillier and more scenic, with substantial forays to the north into both Leavenworth and Jefferson Counties. No planned sags or support, no fee, no complaints, and no apologies. It's long and tiring, but a good ride with great scenery at a beautiful time of year. The route allows for several shorter returns to Lawrence, so come even if you're not up to doing the whole hundred miles. 'Cross bikes are the tool of choice, but a mountain bike works, too. Strong tires are better than light tires. Flats aren't fun. Especially the third, fourth, and fifth ones. The route comes near stores at least two points, but don't count on them coming when you need them or on them being open. Do carry food and water. The first two years we had unexpected support on ride day. It was a pleasant surprise, but it's probably not a good idea to rely on surprises for enough calories and water to finish. Last year we were unsupported, but did ride just enough pavement to get us to the Overbrook Casey's, though I think Shadd was coveting my brie and baguette when we lunched at roadside. There will be water at about the halfway point, the Strecker home on 27th in Jefferson County. If there's a steady rain, don't wait for me at the gazebo. I'll be home by the fire.
