When I first saw this auction I was a bit skeptical in the sellers claim that this was one of John’s bikes. Having raced against John on the dirt from 1993-97 and having had him here at the resort to lead a three day road tour of 80 or so miles a day in the early 90’s my impression was that he would have ridden a much larger frame than a 57cm.

My fondest memory of John was after the tour here he wanted to go mountain biking so I put him on one of our rental bikes, a low end Diamond Back. We did a 3.5-mile climb to the top of the second highest peak in the state Bald Knob. He had it in the middle chainring all the way. He would leave me in the dust and then wait for me while picking blackberries. What a great day that was. Got him on the downhill, which made me feel good. John wasn’t known for his descending skills on a mountain bike. He was airlifted after a crash in the downhill at the 1993 NORBA Nationals in Michigan. He did win the cross country the day before.
