Subject: [CR]Interesting end to Moulton Ebay auction

We will all remember last weeks Moulton Speed auction

http://ebay.com/<blah

I just looked at the bid history and there seems to have been a very

interesting bidding war. In under 4 hours two people went back and

fourth more than doubling the price that anyone else was willing to

pay. Neither are regulars or known high bidders on classic or odd

bikes, so I wonder if this is just a really serious case of

one-upmanship taken to the extreme. Personally I think the auction

went about 3x higher than it should have. Anyone else care to

comment on this interesting auction?

enjoy,

Hello Brandon,

It's of note on the Moulton list serve that the discussion was divided as to why it sold for so much ($6000.00+?) or why such a rare and significant bicycle sold for so little.

As I remember it was claimed that as little as 12 units were made in some sort of Skunk Works facility by or with the involvement of 1936 Olympian Jack Lauterwasser (long term Raleigh and Moulton employee that is still around at 92+, retired sadly ).

These units were also used successfully in several long and short distance records (some which still stand) including the Lands End to John O'Groats. Not the personal ride of Coppi just on Sunday but a piece of history none the less.

The new models of the Moulton Speed "Pylon" start about $8500.00 USD when we built them with nice kit. If it's value could appreciate like it's early built cousin the few quid invested so wisely now could pay for your retirement later down the lane.

For my $6000 I would have to side toward the New Series Moulton models instead of the piece of history but if I had to cash to blow......who knows.

I think both new and older models are viewable at www.alexmoulton.co.uk
