The oil port on a hub designed for road use is to add oil to renew dried up grease in the bearings after a bike has sat idle over the winter.

Using only oil will work on a track bike (and even running without dust covers), but grease is necessary for a road bike.

I have a wheelset built up with Record track hubs, which do not have oil ports. I also have an NOS unbuilt set of Record track hubs with the oil port. When was that change made? Could it have been on the last generation, as my oil-port hubs seem to also have a higher level of polish than the other ones, much like the last of the S-Rec road components.
