I read the article and I found it pretty annoying. It was the kind of writing that makes me seriously question how much misinformation I read and accept regarding subjects on which I know less. If I didn't know better, I fear I might simply accept the "fact" that "Italian products were superior to the competition and remained so until Mavic and Modolo's SSC group in 1979." Say what? Mavic's group (It was not Modolo's group, they simply provided the brakes) was superior to SR? Maybe, maybe not. As this group proves, people can argue that NR is superior to 9-speed Dura Ace. While this view pushes the limits of common sense, IMHO, in some ways it is true. Moreover, Mavic wasn't the only company with offerings that were in some ways arguably superior to SR. What about all the other high-end French stuff, or DA EX? I really like the reference to the 1990 Ace group as some sort of singular event, isolated in time from everythuing that lead up to it. The original 1984 DA SIS group was a huge step, and even the EX stuff before that was leading down the road to Campy being releived of their monopoly at the top of the market. Why say that with STI, there was suddenly a need for Campy to innovate? The scary thing is, if I read similarly slanted nonsense in Road and Track, I might believe it due to my more limited understanding of the subject. There were part ID errors and omitted models in there for good measure. Sadly, all in all, quite a bit better than similar stuff I've seen elsewhere.
