Chuck questioned my comment on "silver anodizing" and it turns out he is correct. I now believe Campy parts are not silver anodized, but rather clear anodized. Here is a snipit from my response to Chuck:

<< Hi Chuck,

I started second guessing myself after reading your email. I called an anodizer, and sure enough, you are correct. He said unfortunately "clear" and "silver" are synonymous, which leads to a lot of confusion. Not only is the luster of the original polished part going to effect the shade of silver but how long the part remains in the anodizing tank. The longer it is in the tank, the thicker the buildup of anodized coating. Therefore, the thicker the coating, the darker the shade of silver and the less glossy it will become. Something that I did know, and was confirmed, is that different aluminum alloys will take anodizing differently, resulting in slightly different shades.

I'm embarrassed for being under the wrong impression for so long. I stand corrected, thanks Chuck. I will post my correction to the group. >>

Kurt,

Clear anodizing was use for a few years, but the vast majority are silver anodized.

The alloy used for the arms, according to Campy, is US made 2014 alum. alloy w/T-4 hardness. The chainrings are US made 7075 w/T-6 hardness. I can't find a reference as to what the caliper alloy is.

Can anyone tell me exactly what process was used to achieve the satin chrome finish seen on NR/SR crankarms? I've heard reference to clear anodizing, but it doesn't seem like that to me. Anyone ever tried refinishing one?

Also, can anyone say what specific alloy and heat treat the forging blanks for these arms were? It seems to be the same alloy and finish as the brake calipers. Any other related parts anyone knows about the specific materials and finishes on as well?

Thanks in Advance, Kurt "No Shandies Please!" Sperry in: Stopped raining, gotta go Bellingham WA
