I tried using a Campy pushrod NGS/Valentino. It doesn't work. With the cage rotated properly, the derailleur is too far forward. The cage pushes against the chain at a point were it is well engaged on the chainring teeth and won't budge. I even tried a Juy 53 which has this problem plus the problem of the cable being on the right side. The Valentino has a clamp held on with two bolts, so it might be possible to put some sort of spacing block between the tube and derailleur and use longer bolts with the clamp.

You can use an old simplex or Campagnolo pushrod model and file the rod to skew the cage slightly. That is what I did on my Bob Jackson tandem before I switched to front drive. The other alternative is to fit a braze-on shifter with the best being the French-mounting style that required one single water-bottle boss.
