Hi Kevin,

When I worked at a Raleigh bike shop in the mid-late 70's, we sold mainly two general lines of bikes - European and Japanese manufacturers. Schwinn was not welcome as a competitor there... The Japanese manufacturer frames I remember selling included Concorde, Azuki, Nishiki, Lotus, etc.

Most of the Japanese manufacturer models at that time came with SR (Sakae) alloy handlebars and stems with Sugino cottered or cotterless cranksets. SR seemed to be a component manufacturer for mid-level alloy or steel bike components.

It almost seemed that Japanese manufacturers like Sakae worked together to provide parts groups because we would see very similar components on different manufacturers models of bikes and wonder if they were made by the same company. The derailleurs were mostly Shimano or Suntour which seemed to last longer and were better built than Simplex or Huret. I recall that Sakae was a separate company unrelated to Sugino, Shimano, or Suntour.
