I will respectfully disagree with the mechanic. Most(all?) of the applications on a bike don't stress the grease in it's assigned task of lubricating the components. Water, dirt, wear products(there's a reason you can see where the balls were running through the races). are what cause the problems. I'm not saying all greases are the same as I don't buy into that for a moment, but I'd still do regular teardowns as deemed appropriate by me based on usage and conditions. My 2 cents.
