While installing a Brampton headset, taken from one bike for another, I noticed on the headset top race (the piece that fits over the bearings on the top, is threaded, and is adjustable) that it has three slots or notches on it. And below the level where the notches are, there is an inset where it appears either a washer would be placed (though not into notches) or the lock nut would fit. My questions are the following: is there a specific tool that fits into the notches for adjustment, or are the notches designed to accept a washer (which in that case I do not have), or is the lock nut to fit into the notches (another case of then not having the proper lock nut, though the one I have does read "Brampton")? In short, the question is what are the notches for and, assuming there's specific purpose for the notches, would setting up the headset without that "proper" piece do damage to the headset? And what is proper for putting into the inset? I have placed a headset washer into it, equalling the depth of it, and the washer appears to fit snugly.

Thank you.

Cheers.

Tom
