I just spent the day tearing down an old Allegro that I brought home yesterday. Its Rally derailleur (obviously not original) is marked as you describe. The 5-speed freewheel is 14-34! It didn't work when I got it, but presumably it worked at one time. I guess you need that for slogging up the Alps.
I suspect that they specify the crank size ranges because of what people call "capacity" these days: the amount of chain that must be taken up between the smallest pair of gears and the largest.
