In the latest issue of Fellowship News the magazine of The Fellowship of Cycling Old-Timers. There is a quote about archaeology and history, that we know a lot about the elite strata of society, but very little of the interesting "man in the field" the artisan and this information is the very devil to find. Just the little details of everyday life that nobody considered relevant to record. We all know the famous frame manufactures but what were the names of their lug cutters and brazers. Here is one I have never heard of until I read this excellent magazine "Joe Oliver" Percy Stallards frame builder. When I first visited Hetchins as a boy in 1959 with my father there were at least three people working there producing frames who were they? Similarly at Ernie Whitcombe' in Deptford in 1973 there wre at least five builders in his workshop but what were their names.
