Recessed brake nuts first began showing up in about 1979 on a few Italian brands, and others quickly followed suit. They seemed to be pretty universal by about '83/84. The regular brake fasteners were still available from Campy after that, but had to be special ordered as nearly all top-level framebuilders had gone over to the recessed method by the mid-80s.
