Though not crucial to wheelbuilding success, this generally helps pressed rim joints in a small way. But the difference in pulling tension between three or four cross isn't too much and shouldn't determine your choice as to which pattern to use. More important than this minor factor is to orient the spokes to create the most space around the tire valve with parallel spokes so as to give the best room for tire inflation with a hand pump. That will be of greater usefulness, IMHO.
