I have in front of me the 1981 Specialized catalog. Listed are the Stumpjumper, Sequoia and Allez, all with full braze ons. I remember this was kind of unique for production bikes for that period.

As near as I can recall, water bottle braze ons first started to appear on mass-produced bikes in the late '70s. Before that they were seen only on high-end custom touring bikes.
Does anybody have a handle on the first appearances of this now-ubiquitous feature?
In particular, when did they first start appearing on production bikes? What brand pioneered this feature?
