Perhaps, but on the one hand you are saying that actual design changes led to changes in the rotation pattern, while on the other it is studies of the existing equiment that could lead to change. I stick with no grease on normal BBs because they are what they are, they haven't changed, so the same "rules" apply. On the other hand Shimano tells me to use grease on my new splined unit, so I do. I made no assumptions about this interface. After tightening thousands of conventional crank bolts, I suddenly felt a need for a torque wrench to use with my new splined cranks. I bought one and used it. As it turns out, it the wrench tells me to stop just where my intuition would have. Oh well, another $60 tool. Tom

I recall that greasing threads was taboo because it allowed you to over tighten a nut or bolt when using a torque wrench, resulting in deformation of the threads and increased likelihood of bolts breaking. Likewise, the logic against greasing the tapers on the bb--you could potentially overtighten the crank, deforming the soft metal of the crank. Of course, 1960s logic also said that you couldn't rotate radial tires left to right, but tire improvements make that a myth today, so I guess it is possible for there to have been studies that debunked the old theories about greasing things too. Since this is a classic list, I will stick to classic methods. It has worked for me thus far.
