"Actually they were a subsidiary of Raleigh.

Originally Gazelle had been the name of a Raleigh budget model line that was later renamed Robin Hood to avoid confusion with the Dutch company.

Then still later Raleigh acquired the Dutch Gazelle company.

Dates? I don't have my Bowden handy but I believe Robin Hood was named in 1942.:

When I was 17, (1968) a friend had a Raleigh Robin Hood- a beautiful bright green thing. His father bought it new for him. It was to replace his Indian bike a 3 speed with drops, that Craig, my friend, had lovingly restored.. At the time I thought the Indian more interesting. By the late 60's had the Robin Hood evolved to be in the middle or upper portion of the Raleigh lineup? My vague recollection was this bike was quite nice.
