I should have guessed that there was some thing wrong with the derailleur, like a weak return spring, or the previous owner would not have replaced it with a Suntour! This bike was used a lot and looks it.

It appears that the bike will be a bit non-functional for the show. I'll be scrounging around for a proper replacement RD at the swap tables.
