Yup ,

The "Schwinn Approved" brakes were made either by Weinmann ( Switzerland ) or by Dia Compe ( Japan ) . And , of course , the Dia Compe brakes were an exact copy of the Weinmanns . The "swing-away" method of quick release on the Dia Compe levers is one big clue . But , Schwinn definitely mixed the levers & the calipers . So , just knowing who made the levers does not tell you who made the calipers . The Dia Compe brakes are amazingly exact copies .

The fact that the bicycle has Mafac brakes means that it was almost certainly not "new" or "untouched" in that box .

The optional Campagnolo brakes , on the Paramounts from the early 1970's , added a huge amount to the purchase price .

1972 - Model P13-9 - $ 350.00 "TOOLS: Included is a tool kit containing Campagnolo tools for disassembling and adjusting the crank set, for adjusting the saddle and seat post and for adjusting the derailleurs." optional custom "made to measure" frame - $ 40.00 optional Unica-Nitor nylon saddle in place of Brooks Professional leather saddle - no charge standard equipment was listed as Clement No. 50 sew-up tires on Weinmann hollow rims ( I've seen Mavic rims in my experience , the Weinmanns were earlier ) optional "Clementi Campionato del Mondo sew-up tires with butyl tubes on Weinmann aluminum alloy wood filled rims -- $12.95 per pair extra cost." standard gearing was 49 - 52 & 14 - 26 . optional gearing was 42 - 52 either no charge , or $ 2.50 optional gearing was 14 - 24 - no charge standard shift levers were Campagnolo clamped onto downtube optional shift levers headset mounted Huret ( "Schwinn Twin Stik" ) - no charge optional shift levers Campagnolo handlebar end - $ 10.95 standard brakes were listed as being made by Weinmann optional "dual position" levers - no charge optional Campagnolo brakes - $ 50.00 optional heavy duty spokes .092 - .080g - $ 4.00

Yes! That's the way it was! You could buy the entire 1972 bicycle ( with good brakes ) for $ 350 . But , if you wanted to upgrade to the optional Campagnolo brakes , it would have cost you an extra $ 50 !! That was more than 14 % additional , and they still got to keep the standard ( good ) brakes !!

1973 - Model P13-9 - Jan. price $ 350.00 , Feb. price $ 425.00 , April price $ 450.00

1974 - Model P13-9 - $ 495.00

> Morgan: This bike should be worth a minimum of $12-1500.00 complete NOS in box with Campag Nuevo Record. The Schwinn catalogue in 1972 listed the center pull brakes as "schwinn approved" with Campag Nuevo Record brakes available as an option at additional cost. I've lost the catalogue, so I don't have an exact extra cost figure. NOS Raleigh Pros from the early 70s with complete Nuevo Record group out of box were selling for about $1700 from Bicycle Classics, and Vandals Bike Shop in New Bedford, Mass as recently as a few years ago. I almost purchased my first Paramount in 1968 for $300, but opted for a French Astra for $250. The Astra was a gorgious, well made cycle, and $50.00 was a lot of money is 1968. I was making $40.00 per week.
