BTW, I also attend many regular auctions. The rule is always Caveat Emptor, unless you really trust the auctioneer. (I do a few.) In my experience, there is more fraud and deception in off-line auctions. For those who tend to vilify eBay in particular, I think a cautious/informed bidder does extremely well over 90% of the time. My Dad used to say: "You can't hit a home run every time." If you can't accept that fact of eBay reality you really shouldn't play the game. Just MHO.
