Since I ride my older bikes usually only in good weather, I have contemplated waxing the chains. That would keep them much cleaner - especially ORO chains and freewheels aren't all that "oro" after a few hundred miles (or kilometri?).
What do people think?
Will the components last as well as with oiled chains?
How to do it best?

Craig responds Waxing with paraffin works well if you use a double boiler and thoroughly wipe the still hot excess paraffin off the chain. But If your main concern is keeping your stuff clean And If you ride only when it's dry And If you don't ride more than 50 miles or so at I time........................................... Let me suggest you use
WD-40
Yes, I know it is a cleaner and not a lubricant, but it will work adequately under the above circumstances if cleanliness is the primary goal. It is kinda stinky though.
