This seems to come up a lot with bar end shifters. Doesn't this depend to some extent on the bars you're using and maybe your hand size? My hands are on the big side and I just install the shifters on an uncut deep drop bar and seem happy with it. To someone installing bar end shifters for the first time it might seem like the bar cutting is a requirement, when maybe they'd be happier leaving the bar intact.
