This seatpost was steel though, so doing it in aluminum might be dicey strength-wise. I didn't hear of any of the Japanese SLs breaking, but they weren't common, so I might not have heard of it even if they did break. Try to leave rounded transitions (fillets) rather than sharp corners if you do it, and polish out any machining/filing marks - standard anti-fatigue advice for any part that'll see cyclical loads
