Whatever film it is Nick at H.Lloyds print the transfers on is quite susceptible to damage by solvents, hence the warning on the instructions he supplies.

I asked him the same question once and he told me that virtually any of the modern clear varnish / lacquers would cause the transfers to craze if applied in a heavy-handed manner (clearly the thicker coats give the solvents in them longer to work on the transfer before evaporating) particularly those lacquers that were xylene based or came out of cheap spray cans that use propane/butane as the propellant. He also cautioned against applying any varnish too early as it would react with the solvent used to hold the transfers on, before it had dried.

The method of applying the transfers, gently pressing out the air/surplus water from under the transfer, allowing plenty of time - say overnight for the transfer solvent to evaporate, then "clearcoating" by building up in thin layers, seems to work without problems - irrespective of the varnish or lacquer type.

Perhaps Brian Bayliss will comment - he's recently applied "waterslide" transfers to his salmon-pink Flying Scot...
