Re: [CR]Downward spiral of classic bike prices

(Example: Production Builders:Cinelli:Laser)

Tom Sanders asked: Where do the other list members see this going?

I believe that pristine semi-rare and good condition rare bikes will continue to garner reasonably high prices. Determining which meet the classificaton as rare and semi-rare is a bit more of a problem. Size does matter too. I'm not sure about the sizes of the bikes Tom referenced, other than the McLean he bought for $600. The McLean had a lot of off-list discussion because of the non-standard McLean decals on the bike--which I do believe affected the price and that Tom got a great buy if the bike turns out to be as nice (albeit refinished) as advertised. Regarding bikes not making reserve on ebay--that doesn't really tell a complete story in my opinion. There are often prospective buyers who have made contact with sellers off-list only to learn that the reserve is beyond their number and they stop bidding. I still believe that most collectors do not buy as an investment, however, we would all hope that our collections will not lose money should we decide to sell. But, in general, I tend to agree with Tom's observation that prices seem a bit lower than usual the past few months. Lou Deeter, Orlando FL
