We had a prototype bike on display in the shop a number of years ago, from Cinelli I think, that had the front brake INSIDE the fork crown, some sort of scissors action. I will look and see if I have a picture of it somewhere. I have mounted brakes in front of the seatstays a few times. One reason is for better pannier clearance. Another might be when you have a brake where the cable comes out the opposite side of normal, like the old Gran Compes. But on the Jack Taylor tandem I had built in 1978, I had a pair of Mafac cantis, a Phil disc in the front, and a sidepull in front of the seatstays, all operated from a pair of Mafac dual levers, both fronts on the left and both rears on the right. That bike would stop on a dime.

And if you will look closely at the pic of the Taylor Trike in my album at http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/rdf1249/vwp?.dir=/England+1982/Jack+Taylor then look at photo #8 you will see that it has a cantilever on the fork, and then out in front of that there is a post with a centerpull mounted on it. Interesting, eh?
