Since a few listmembers have asked:

The Carnac Carlit available from France are touring shoes, currently made, NOS. As classic touring shoes, they don't take cleats, they work best with toeclips (and not with clipless at all). They are good for walking, but the sole is stiffer than your average tennis shoe (but not as stiff as modern cycling shoes). So the focus is on cycling and walking, rather than walking and cycling.

They are sort of like a much nicer-made Avocet Touring, to answer that question.

They look similar to the ones on the Manufactum site, which seem to be an older model. The current ones have a plastic sole with little ribs in them. These sort of grip the pedals, except for some reason, there are two flat strips where usually the pedal cages go. So not much grip there. Manufactum: not sure whether they have not updated their web site, or have old inventory.

The problem with ordering shoes unseen is fit. I don't know how they fit compared to other Carnacs. I suspect they may fit differently. All I know is that I wear a 43 in Sidis, and a 43 of the Carnac Carlit fits me fine. Maybe the Carnac is a bit wider and a tad longer.

Feel free to order from Manufactum, if you'd like the older version - assuming that is what they sell. Or contact me within the next 4 days, if you'd like me to order a pair for you. BTW, they are available in white, too, I believe.

As I said before, if you order, there are no returns. Sorry about that...

Maybe we should pester Carnac USA to bring them in? I think Grant Petersen of Rivendell tried, in vain.
