The cool rack to have around here in the late 70s - early 80's was a Pringle, made by Mark Pringle, who was possibly America's best road racer at one point. His 10th in '77 is still the best ever by an American male in the senior amateur World Road Race Championship. (Lance got 11th before turning pro)

Mark was (is?) a machinist and welder, and saw team cars in Europe with custom made racks that were better than anything you could buy here, so he made 'em. Fairly heavy steel construction, Campy dropouts on the wheel forks, ability to put lots more wheels than bikes on the rack. Trunk-top as well as roof-top; the cool guys had both. I still have my rooftop model - it's pretty rusty but works fine
