Tom,

It's one of these ;

http://www.flying-scot.co.uk/replica_parts.html

Those braze-on's you see on the seat stay's, take a small rack intended to be used to support a laden saddlebag, or as often happened, to strap your cape, tools, primus etc and all sorts onto for a day's ride and obligatory drum-up !

And now the inevitable plug - I've started reproducing these racks to order, to make up for those that go missing ! - a snip at $15 plus shipping...

I asked the the seller for the full frame number, as the alpha bit was missing off the usual alphanumeric serial number that this bike should have. He promptly replied with the correct full-fat frame number - 345i - making it the 345th frame made in 1959 - though still possibly sold in 1960 as he described in the ebay auction.

Here are clearer views of the frame, supplied by the seller (to whom I'be absolutely no connection)

http://www.flying-scot.co.uk/frame_345i.html (mapped)

All 531, Nervex Pro lugs, and Simplex dropouts...but can anyone tell me what variant of 531 transfer is on the seat tube ? - It's not appropriate for the age of the frame but obviously provided when it was refinished at a later date.
