> I stopped using old Silcas... About 2 years ago I was pumping up my tire 115psi & I was just about to stop when all of a sudden the back(top half) of the pump shot out like a bullet! If someone would have been standing behind them it could have really injured them badly, the part that was threaded in just broke off completely. I think they look nice on a display bike but not the greatest or safest pump to actually use ( :..... Be careful

yeah, that can happen if you bump the valve stem. Silca's don't have a check valve to prevent air from traveling from the tire/tube to the pump.

If you have finished pumping up the tire, and want to take your hand off the pump handle, extend the pump. This way, it can be pressurized w/o the handle flying out.

There's no doubt that Silca's are quirky, but that just adds to their charm, right? <grin> Of course, my commuting bike has a Zefal HPX, 'cause charm doesn't mean squat when it's 10 degree F, and you're fixing a flat in the dark.
