hi steve,

works for me. i have a classic bike with a suntour ultra 6 freewheel (same spacing as most 7 speeds). i couldn't be bothered with old derailleurs and run a modern campy 9 speed units blocked off at their limits. the crankset (c-record) was purportedly a 7 or 8 speed but my 9 speed sram chain rolls through the lot without any undue wear or glitches. i would go as far as to say that shifting is probably better than an original 6 speed chain. the narrower chain is even more helpfull for innacurate shifts as its a little narrower and leaves room for error. all shifting is friction and its a good set-up as far as im concerned.

in all i wouldn't bat an eyelid at using a sram 8 speed (pc48, pc58 etc) with most any 6 or 7 speed setups. i think a 9 speed is determined more by your chainrings and their spacing than the freewheel.

ciao,

ben kamen
